Australian Telecom Giant Telstra Encountered a Data Breach

Cyber security has become a major area of concern in the age of digital transformation. Companies and organizations are primarily focusing on maintaining a strict cyber security policy to limit occurrences of cyber attacks. Despite that, cybercriminals are continuously launching successful attacks on global enterprises. Telstra, a telecom company based in Australia, has encountered a data breach incident, exposing the information of employees.

Telstra Corp Ltd reported that the company has been hit by a data breach that disclosed current as well as former employees. A few days earlier, another Australian telecom company Optus encountered a massive ransomware attack resulting in exposing a significant volume of crucial data. The two cyber attacks have naturally raised concerns about Australian cyber security policies and the maintenance of data privacy and confidentiality.

Telstra Data Breach Incident

According to the report, Telstra has suffered a data breach incident that resulted in releasing employee data. Although the incident has been reported as a “small data breach” it has raised concerns about the current cyber security system.

  • A third party intrusion has caused exposing employee data from 2017.
  • Reports claimed that the exposed data was considered “basic” as it was only limited to employee names and email addresses.

The company never mentioned the number of employees affected or the precise time of the attack. Affected employees were immediately altered though the attack can cause “minimal risk” to them. Telstra is currently working with a third party organization to accurately identify the cause of this data breach.

Protection against Data Breach Incidents

The Telstra data breach incident has raised concerns about the maintenance of data privacy and confidentiality.

To minimize data breach incidents, organizations need to adopt the following measures:

  • Vulnerability Assessment & Penetration Testing or VAPT to successfully identify security weak points and vulnerabilities and provide appropriate solutions
  • 24×7 monitoring of online networks to quickly identify suspicious activities which could lead to possible cyber attacks
  • Endpoint security measures to make sure every connected device doesn’t become a gateway for cybercriminals
  • Risk assessment and mitigation plan in case of a cyber attack to quickly recover

Data breach incidents can be significantly minimized using a proactive cyber security plan which will not only identify security loopholes but also improves the cyber resiliency of the online system.
